When she’d first arrived on this island-or-whatever-it-was, Quartz had been instructed by her guide to get to know the land, explore, and meet others. She’d taken that task to heart, as it was her only real lead for finding her feet in this place. Every day her paws took her someplace different…usually to a spiritual prey creature that called to the divinity within her and any nearby wolves.
Today, though…today it was just her. Her and the slope that carried her ever upward until she reached the barren fields that seemed to be at the highest point of all climbable land in this space. She continued forward, scowling at the lack of life in the area. Sure, there were a few things – some birds, the occasional plant or rodent – but this land was almost wholly repellent. She would not be making this her home. Not unless some trusted friends wished to start a pack here. But why would anyone ever do that? When would she find friends she could say she trusted?
Well…Pepper was a start, and some of her other hunting partners. Perhaps once she was done here she could try to locate them. She was certain she’d seen enough of each biome here to get a sense of what would be the best home for her. It might finally be time to settle down with the wolves she was coming to trust. It was a nice idea – forming a pack dedicated to feeding and protecting each other and helping all its members find their godhood.
And, for now, at least she could enjoy the view. The dusk sky was beautiful up here, and she was sure nightfall would be even more so. Maybe she didn’t want to live here, but she could spend a few hours, at least. And maybe she’d meet another friend, if she didn’t screw that up for herself somehow.

[googlefont=Roboto][googlefont=Montserrat][googlefont=Open+Sans] [attr="class","neith"] There was something to be said for darkness. Shadows. The creeping blackness that had always existed within her, now manifested into something greater.
Though Oberon had encouraged her to leave her original location and venture across the lands, she had only done so once – and then she had been tempted by rabbits, little beasts that stank of the same divinity that wreathed Oberon.
She had caught one, had feasted upon it – and had then headed back toward the sky, wary of the valley’s center.
Which she knew was odd – a wolf was meant to seek shelter beneath trees, hidden from the night sky. But she appreciated the openness of the fields. The game here was scarce, yes, but there was something to be said for the sheer transparency she enjoyed.
But, shadows. Recently, perhaps as a boon granted by the rabbit’s life, Neith had found herself capable of submerging within the darkness that clung to the ground – any sort of shadow, any sense of depth. It was as if she became liquid blackness herself, disappearing into the puddle provided for her.
She found she liked it. Liked it so much that she was almost constantly using it, just to see how far she could push it, how long she could keep herself hidden from sight.
And she was doing so yet again – though at this point, it was also how she rested, hidden from prying eyes – when the dark creature first crested a hill near her hiding spot.
For the briefest of moments, she thought it Oberon returned – and the shadow serpent that clung to her like a second skin briefly bristled, heat pits flaring. They were not ready to face him yet, had only begun to shed their mortality for something more divine.
But then it turned, and Neith saw it was both female and not quite so large as the great black beast that acted as her guide.
With the knowledge came something like suspicion, that another should so confidently wander upon her lands. So she waited, watching patiently, as the other explored the fields, until she passed near the deep shadow cast by a boulder Neith had submerged herself in.
Then, as the other turned to once more survey her surroundings, Neith pulled herself up and out of the shadow, shaking off the darkness like lingering flecks of water, her violet eyes materializing first and the rest of her following.
Cream-colored, except for the black spot that marred the fur around her left eye, Neith possessed an almost meek fragility to her person – and she was careful to school that same expression upon her face, uncertain and wary and delicate.
“Hello,” she said, the word thin as tissue, threatening to tear. “Why are you here?”
In my fields.

For a brief time, she simply watched the sky, waiting and thinking. Plans formed in her head – nothing she could put into practice until she returned to more fertile lands, but they would serve her well tonight, and for every day after until she’d fully realized her purpose as a mortal wolf in these lands. Having a plan in some stage of formation was an odd comfort, too. It was more than she’d really had even as she fled her family’s land. Whatever reason fate had for bringing her here, it had given her a direction for her adult life, and she supposed she was grateful…for the most part. Another life seemed to materialize out of nowhere. She tensed as she sensed it – wolf, mortal like her. Turning, she saw the mostly pale form, her expression hinting at wariness and fragility. She knew better than to trust the latter – even an ill-fed wolf like Pepper could be dangerous, and it bothered her that the other had simply popped into existence nearby, without the sense coming to her gradually as it often did. It was a reminder that, like her, this wolf was on the path to godhood, granting her more power than her appearance might indicate. As if Quartz needed reasons not to trust this stramger. The darker-furred wolf turned to the pale, doing her best to keep her fur flat and her posture neutral. She’d asked a simple question, and hadn’t displayed and hostility yet, so Quartz could respond in kind. “Same as you, I imagine,” she replied. “I was told to explore this land and find myself and my purpose here. Isn’t that what they tell everyone?” At least, Oberon’s words to her seemed like the same thing he’d tell anyone else he encountered. Go out into the various lands and find what aspect of existence calls the strongest, and then try to make that power their own. That was what they were supposed to be doing, was it not? Neith Zahrani

[googlefont=Roboto][googlefont=Montserrat][googlefont=Open+Sans] [attr="class","neith"] Neith could not quite keep the smile from flitting across her face, as fleeting as a lark, as soft as a shadow. The other female did well to keep her cool – but Neith knew that their kind possessed excellent senses.
Are you wondering why you didn’t sense me approach? The words went unsaid, gathering on her tongue like pooling honey. She swallowed them down, a swift gulp that bespoke her supposed nervousness – or her barely-contained glee, at what she was already becoming.
But was this wolf ally or enemy? Was she like Oberon – one that held fast to its self, confident in what she was and what she did?
Neith could never receive true love from a creature like that. She needed someone desperate, someone on the edge – because the love she received must be pure and untainted by selfishness. All give, with no expectation of receiving.
“Same as me,” she echoed softly, considering what that meant. She did not think it true – but then the other was further expanding on her explanation, and Neith lightly bit her tongue. The words that spilled from the female’s lips were reminiscent of Oberon’s advice, and she gently raked the top of her tongue against her upper canines, the sharp flash of pain schooling her expression into polite befuddlement.
“They?” she asked, head tilting to the side, muzzle not quite wrinkled in confusion. “I wouldn’t know,” she said. “This is my home – the valley’s bottom makes me feel uncomfortable.”
She smiled, awkwardly, and added, “There’s something in the air down there – I don’t really like it, you see.” And then, startled, as if she had just remembered her manners, Neith dipped her head in a hurried bow, “Oh! I’m Neith, by the way.”
In her ear, the shadow serpent hissed its approval.

Pepper Nervous. It was a word that summarized the actions of a particularly scrawny wolf well. Pepper took each step as cautiously as if she was stalking a particularly skittish piece of prey - drawn-out and full of uncertainty. She didn't like being away from the familiar Cradle, especially out in an open plot like this, but there was good reason. After partaking in a single, ghostly rabbit the day prior, the skeleton canine had taken a quick nap before the journey home. It was after this brief slumber that her nose picked up the welcome scent of a particular female; Quartz. The night-coated huntress that she had met during their flawless run with the bull elk. Their conversation had been short then, but the salt-pepper she-wolf got the impression that the other was a genuine sort. Pepper longed for even a moment of company and this seemed like a perfect opportunity.
The twisted knots in her stomach, however, beckoned differently. Negative thoughts filled the older female's head on different 'what ifs'; this was the reason her pace was pretty lacking to catch-up. Still, eventually, elongated limbs dragged up a slow incline until figures popped into view. In the distance stood Quartz and her creamy opposite - talking it seemed like. Pepper didn't recognize the other, but perhaps the two were already friends? It was a kind though, but one that sunk a heavy rock in her chest. Would she be interrupting? Unwanted company? Sadly it was too late to turn around; if she could see them then they could most certainly glance over and see her lean build.
It was almost painful to close the distance between the trio. Even as Pepper neared, a good yard was granted just in case her presence was less than welcome. She might of looked tall, but she felt like an ant. It was pretty hard to manage a smile through the anxiety that tensed every muscle, even harder to force words from inky lips, "Hey.. again. I'm really sorry if I'm barging into something." While Neith had copied the tone really well, it was little match for the genuine frailty that quivered through Pepper's vocals. She was beginning to wish she had simply headed back to the expanse of snowdrops instead.

The other commented, and Quartz dipped her head in acknowledgement, though her gaze didn’t leave her companion. This meeting was too new for that level of trust. And she seemed confused by Quartz’s words. That was concerning…had she not met the guides, yet? One had found her almost immediately, but she supposed – if this one’s guide had been held up by some event or other… She’d worry over that later. For now, she just listened. Her companion stated that this was her home, and that the valley’s bottom made her uncomfortable. That hinted that she’d been in this place a while, which further concerned her. She really should have met a guide by this point, or perhaps she had and the information given her had been different. Maybe she’d ask Oberon about it the next time she saw it, but she wasn’t sure how much more open she should be in discussing her own interaction with the gods. If the advice he’d shared with her wasn’t universal, then it didn’t concern other wolves, anyhow. “I smelled no scent markers on my way here,” she responded after a moment. “The last thing I wish to do is invade another’s territory, though. I won’t linger long.” But she was speaking again, commenting on something being in the air. Quartz nodded to that. She’d noticed it too – in the woods while she hunted the spirit rabbits. But she’d only felt it in that area. Other areas such as the beach and the cradle seemed perfectly safe. Maybe she should give both places another patrol, but it could be only the woods that the other wolf had visited. Her companion spoke once more, this time to introduce herself. Quartz mirrored her stance. “I go by Quartz.” It was good to have a name to put with that distinctive face. Her powers picked up the trace of another life – wolf – making its way toward them. She kept her mundane senses on alert, waiting for the newcomer to draw near. It was a caution that didn’t seem needed, because Quartz readily recognized the scrawny salt-and-pepper form as she revealed herself. Pepper spoke, and Quartz snorted. “That would be you and me both.” She dipped her head to the newcomer, though, and let her tail swish behind her a couple times. It was always good to see her again. [googlefont=Roboto][googlefont=Montserrat][googlefont=Open+Sans] [attr="class","neith"] Not so easily placated, the snake murmured in her ear, the hiss of his rattling voice overlaying the soft words that flowed from the stranger’s maw. A clever thing, she replied in her mind. Her face remained the same – confusion softening her edges, clear curiosity shining bright from her eyes. Neith clung to every word the other spoke, seeking out something, anything, that might provide just one more scrap of information. She didn’t need to know everything, but the fact this wolf seemed to be cut from the same cloth as Oberon meant she had to step carefully. Quietly. “You’re not invading,” she murmured, a feathery warmth creeping into her tone, almost shy – not quite coquettish, because she did not think the female would respond well to sudden flirting – but a hint of maidenly naivety. “No one really comes up here, is what I meant to say.”Something like wistfulness painted her voice as she added, peeking up at the startling blue that hung above them, “I like the open air. The sky. There isn’t a lot of prey, but I wouldn’t trade this place for anything.” And she smiled, all childish pride. And then the other was finally giving her name – and Neith leapt upon the information, almost puppyish as she enthused, “You have such a pretty name!” Then, stumbling, “I mean, uhm, it suits you?”But whatever bashfulness she was conjuring up was quickly swept aside. She caught the immediate moment Quartz’s attention shifted, and she turned with the other’s gaze, spying yet another newcomer. And they know each other, the serpent noted. Neith watched the pair greet one another, this off-white, skeletal creature with a timid voice, Quartz with a much more relaxed air about her than when she had greeted Neith. “There’s no barging,” she hurried to clarify, almost bouncing toward the stranger in her haste to smooth things over. “I just wanted to know why my fields suddenly became so popular.” She flashed another smile, paws practically prancing upon the rocky ground. “I’m Neith,” she added, aware this new female might not have caught her name. “What’s your name?”tags: @quartz, Pepperwords: 354 notes: sorry for the slow! Pepper It was a big relief to hear that her presence wasn't a burden to the two females. The fact loosened Pepper's tightened muscles slightly, allowing her tense appearance to settle a bit. She still held a tentative physique, as was her nature, but at least now that skeleton form didn't seem so rigid. There was a more successful attempt to smile followed by a friendly dip of the canine's sharp cranium. This light-coated stranger seemed nice enough, yet one would catch Pepper still hanging more toward Quartz instead of the prior. It wasn't because she didn't like or trust Neith, but more on lines of simply knowing her former hunting partner more. Still, for fear of appearing rude, the salt-pepper mortal promptly answered the two inquiries. "Oh, I was trying to catch-up with Quartz. Err. And I'm Pepper; It's nice to meet you, Neith." There was a bit of a stumble in there but the words came out relatively as smooth as one would expect. Only the kind truth slid from her lips.
Pepper was doing her best to poise herself properly. Not proud or anything as regal as that, simply trying to keep what one might interpret as meek from her stance. She didn't want to make a bad first impression for this newcomer; the more friends the merrier right? There was also the need to stay in Quartz's graces as well. The scrawny canine really enjoyed being the company of the obsidian female, thus messing it up now would be painful. She had been proud to show her worth in hunting the bull elk, but now they were simply conversing. Something she wasn't the best at. The salt-pepper wolf always felt like all eyes were judging everything she did and said, so it was important to try and keep herself stable.

The pale wolf said they weren’t invading, and Quartz dipped her head. She supposed she could understand that, though she imagined it’d have to be lonely in a place like this. Few wolves would want to stay where it was hard to hunt, after all. Not only that, it really was too open and exposed here. There was beauty in a place so high up, but she’d happily sacrifice a bit of beauty for security. “If that’s what calls to you, then that’s what you should have,” she offered at the pale wolf’s comment. She then commented on Quartz’s name. Was it? She didn’t mind her, name but she’d always found it weird. Still, she was happy her companion liked it. “Thank you. Yours is pretty, too.” And it was – at least, Quartz was pretty sure the other wolf hadn’t simply been named after an odd-colored rock. Neith assured them that they hadn’t intruded and introduced herself to Pepper, who gave her own name in return as well as stated she’d been trying to catch up to Quartz. Had she really? Was something wrong? Did she need help with something? She glanced at the salt-and-pepper female. “Is everything all right?” Maybe she was just lonely? Wolves really weren’t meant to be alone for longer than it took to find a mate and start a pack. But she knew this world was dangerous – more so than the one they’d all left behind. Anything at any level of severity might have happened. Neith Zahrani

[googlefont=Roboto][googlefont=Montserrat][googlefont=Open+Sans] [attr="class","neith"] “Pepper!” Neith continued her enthusiastic act, pouncing upon the skeletal’s creature name with all the joy of a fox upon a mouse. “It fits you!” she chattered, eyes darting between her and Quartz. Timid as a mouse, the serpent commented. Much easier to knock down than Quartz, mayhaps that much easier to bend. But she wouldn’t try, not with the stalwart black female positioned so close by. Besides, the two already had a link – and Neith knew enough to know that first loves always won out over the second-comers. Childhood friends, too, the snake added, spitefully helpful. Not that she thought the pair attached – but there was a closeness there, an ease to their banter that left Neith the obvious third wheel. Behind her dancing violet eyes, she watched them dispassionately, every other ruined love of her life overlaid atop them. “I’m so glad you found your friend,” she chirped, then, at the concerned words Quartz uttered, she backed up a step, dipping her head quickly. “Oh, but, if you need to talk – I can go? Yeah, I can go! I mean, there’s a lot of land here. I can just… wander off? Catch a field mouse?” Neith offered a careless smile, flicking her gaze from one to the other. And she would. But what she did afterwards – well, they knew not of her shadowy disposition. And if she overheard something interesting while submerged in the inky blackness? Perhaps that was just her sheer dumb luck at play, coincidence finally taking pity on her. tags: Pepperwords: 254 notes: -- [newclass=.neith]max-height:400px;color:#E1DFD8;text-align:justify;padding:10px;width:440px;font-family:Open Sans;font-size:10px;overflow:auto;background:#000;opacity:.5[/newclass] [newclass=.neith b]font-family:montserrat;font-weight:700;color:#ab87db;font-size:12px;[/newclass] [newclass=.neith i]color:#fff; font: 11px Roboto; font-style: italic;[/newclass] [newclass=.neith::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background-color: #fff; width:1px; [/newclass] [newclass=.neith::-webkit-scrollbar]width: 5px; height: 5px; background: #ccc; border: 3px solid #f0f0f0;[/newclass] [newclass=.neith::-webkit-scrollbar-corner]background: #ccc; border: 2px solid #ccc;[/newclass]
