While wolves are free to hunt as they please and may attain prey without difficulty, occasionally Hunts will be available. These Hunts can be either requirements set by Guides or special events that may award prizes to those who partake.
Hunts, by their very nature, encourage wolves to intermix, forging bonds between strangers and strengthening a pack's unity. To ensure Hunts provide a level of challenge and also act fairly, we have designed a simplified system for special Hunt threads.
[attr="class","boopsie"]hunting
A Hunt may begin at an admin's discretion or a member may request one through the Service Center. These events are managed by site staff to prevent power playing or god modding. Quest-related Hunts are typically Closed affairs unless the questing member states otherwise. Otherwise, Hunts are public events and anyone may join at any time.
To make sure everyone properly contributes, any wolves wishing to receive awards associated with the Hunt must post and begin to contribute before the targeted prey is at half health. Others may join after the prey has reached half health, however they will not receive any rewards.
Vox Deus relies on a D20 system to handle hunts. The following provides detail on how these mechanics are processed. The information is not necessary for members to memorize but is provided as reference for those who like to know how the system works.
[attr="class","boopsie"]challenge ratings
Challenge Ratings are assigned to hunting targets based on their general difficulty, though this rating may be adjusted higher or lower dependent on the number of wolves hunting and the powers they possess. An animal's challenge rating is directly tied to the amount of health they have excluding Special prey.
Special prey denotes beings that are unique and may possess powers of their own. Special prey may reward special awards, but defeating them will always be a great challenge. Special prey should never be hunted alone unless specifically required for a quest.
Challenge Ratings are as follows:Difficult — Prey has 100 HP and follows the same damage rules as characters.
Hard — Prey has 75 HP and follows the same damage rules as characters halved.
Normal — Prey has 50 HP and must achieve a 10 or higher on a roll to deal damage.
Easy — Prey has 25 HP and must achieve a 15 or higher on a roll to deal damage.
[attr="class","boopsie"]dice rolls
Dice rolls both determine if an attack hits, and if so, what amount of damage it deals. While wolves will always hit on a four (4) or higher, the only prey that emulates this fully is labeled Difficult.1 - 3 — Flat Miss. A critical failure of one (1) may incur light (1-2 HP) damage to the wolf.
4 - 5 — Glancing Hit. Deals 2 HP.
6 - 10 — Regular Hit. Deals 5 HP.
11 - 15 — Strong Hit. Deals 10 HP.
16 - 20 — Critical Hit. Deals 15 HP. A max hit of twenty (20) will result in the target being unable to make an action.
Remember that Challenge Rating is not static and may drop or rise based on the number of wolves participating in the hunt and the powers they bring. Speaking of powers...
[attr="class","boopsie"]character stats
A player character will always have a flat 50 HP. However, mutations and powers, as well as how the wolf acts in a hunt, can reduce damage incurred.
Offensive Powers will always hit if used as an attack. This may cause normal prey to flee, however, and leaves a wolf more open to retaliation. For these reasons, wolves may find themselves better off using their powers defensively - either defending themselves and others, or providing support in some fashion. Or, if things go south, using their powers to flee.
Occasionally power usage will produce additional bonuses, but these are up to an individual player's cleverness and a staff member's discretion. This information is intentionally left vague to try and prevent metagaming and the creation of characters built solely around becoming the strongest.
