Pepper Salt-and-pepper fur bounced and waved as long limbs tore forward. Some seemed to be damp from melted frost while others held a divine liquid - blood - though not from her own body. Pepper had quickly departed from the battle once the great Thalarctos had been silenced. She had been one of the lucky to come out of the fight with merely a few bruises to her name. It was hard to leave her obsidian friend behind, but after witnessing Quartz's healing ability the decision was easier. Besides, there were many questions that itched the scrawny female's tongue; most importantly, what was wrong with Morpheus? She had called to the horned canine during the beginning thunder of battle, yet he did not come. Could gods die? She had seen him get wounded during their hard-won fight against the sow. Maybe he just got sick? Is that possible?
Typically it would be characteristic for her to worry of abandonment, though that thought surprisingly never came. The dream-walking male just didn't seem like one to cast another out. Placid, perhaps, but not cruel. Already Pepper envisioned him as a guardian of sorts; a wise member of the family that would guide her when lost or weary. And she was certainly both of those things now. On top of the worry that had built for her Guide was the blooming of fear toward the unknown. She wasn't sure when it had started, but something odd was going on within her own body. Many times the skeleton wolf had practiced bravery against the merciless emotion of fear like the deity had instructed, yet it never went away. In fact, the intangible vines seemed to have grown an alarming amount - like she could sense the feeling not only in herself but others as well. The sharp tang in the air coming from the critters that scurried away from her speedy pace, a salty spice in the wind as sea-birds flew overhead with their cries, and even her own scent... sweet and sickly all at once. It was terrifying.
Pepper's heart hammered with each step closer to her sanctuary - the Cradle. There, where she had been dropped and first met Morpheus, was the closest thing to home she had. The female also hoped she could find him there. First to make sure if he was alright and secondly maybe to have all these buzzing questions cleared. Maybe it wasn't too late to take his offer? The frail canine had been prideful before, yet this fear was getting too much to deal with. It was within her nature to wish the best for others, but recently she had been too scared to even do that. Usually, upon the dying breathes of prey, Pepper would pray for their fear and pain to be taken away; this kind prayer has been sending her into an overwhelming panic attack without fail the past few weeks now. Her heart would beat so quick it felt like it would burst while unstoppable terror would grab control of every nerve. She didn't understand why these horrible things were happening to her. Was it a sign she was unworthy like the dying specter had said?
In any case, her off-white body finally broke into the sea of snowdrops. The smell, which was typically sugary and relaxing, just held a dozen different revolting scents. It had to be ignored for now, though. The run was short to get to the tree in which she slept under - where the flowery flied had finally recovered from her panicked raging upon first being spit here. A few gulps of oxygen were used to sustain the wolf's lungs before her desperate cry rang out across the living plains, "Morpheus!"
She didn't know what she would do if he didn't come now... Each second that ticked by in silence, however, only grew the dark turmoil within.

[googlefont=Roboto][googlefont=Montserrat][googlefont=Open+Sans] [attr="class","morpheus"] Morpheus moved languid across the land, loose-limbed and easygoing. The end of the god creature had come by the paws of the mortals – at least, that was the only conclusion he could draw, as the biting winds fell beneath the harsh heat of the sun. What he would have given to be a part of that battle – but then it had been he and that great black brute of a god that had initially blinded it, torn the claws from its paw – and they had embedded nastily in Morpheus’ skull, a blow that left him staggering about as if one of the risen dead. But a pair of gods, especially with one doubly slighted by the inopportune power matchup, were not such a match for the god bear – and it had fled when they both had to withdraw, the right horn of Morpheus’ pair snapped near the base and weeping heavy droplets of blood. Wounds still knitting back together from the previous encounter had torn anew, and Morpheus had been forced back into the realm of the gods, where he might rest without worry of time or space. But, separated by the veil, he had known he was closed off from his charges and only the faintest of calls had echoed within his mind, so distant he could not begin to guess the voice’s owner. Now time had passed in the mortal realm, but for him it had been barely a nap in the sun-soaked afternoon – ephemeral and warm, no longer edged in ice as his dreams had previously been. And he had awoken refreshed, rejuvenated, not a single blemish upon his perfect being. The gift of godhood. He passed slowly through the Cradle, searching for any of the mortals he had come to know before his sudden absence. In particular, he searched for those that had won his favoritism, seeking their power – and he found a familiar blaze quickly, all silver and black, the creep of decay wafting toward him upon an invisible wind. Pepper, he thought – and then she called to him, both with her streaking, dancing power, and with her voice, the sound of his name bouncing between the few trees that littered the fields of flowers. Ears pitched forward in concentration, he broke into a swifter trot, aimed toward a location he quickly recognized as familiar – where he had first met her, all meek and mindful, barely a hint of divinity upon her. She nearly blazed with it now, and he had a much easier time finding her, a placid smile gentling his face as he caught sight of her, stood amongst the snowdrops. She still looked much the same but there was a marked change to her, some acknowledgement of her true nature, that made her unconsciously stand just a tiny bit taller, compared to when they had first met. “Pepper,” he greeted, dipping his head in a friendly bow. He came to a stop a few strides from her, looking her over carefully. Then his nose wrinkled, the scent of winter clinging to her. A recognizable smell. “You met him,” he said, almost wryly. She’d done more than passed the bear god by, that much was clear. “Are you all right?”It was his most pressing concern. While she seemed to be in good health, albeit radiating anxiety as was her nature, it could be that she hid a wound his eyes were unable to catch. After all, he was a creature of dreams, not life – beyond the care of himself, he had never developed a sense for judging others’ injuries. Pepper Thankfully, the antlered god was spotted rather quickly as he made brisk steps toward the awaiting female. It was good to see he was alright - in perfect health even. No splotches of maroon stained that ghostly pelt nor did it seem his divinity was any less radiant than usual. These observations stirred a relieved smile across Pepper's lips; one with any sense of sight could see how the scrawny wolf visibly relaxed from the tense stance that was held previously. The thorny tangles of that despised feeling still twisted within, but at least Morpheus was here to answer these piles of questions. Before that, however, the dream god seemed to have some concerns of his own. It only took a moment for her scrunched face of confusion to clear-up into realization of whom he was speaking of.
"Oh, the bear. Yes, I'm fine. Only a few bruises this time thanks to the effort of the others." A spark of admiration passed through her olive gaze in remembrance. It had only been about an hour ago, but it felt like a lifetime of struggle. She would have to remember to thank each of those wolves properly when next they met. "Quartz and Zora were with me." Her feathery, shivering voice added. Honestly, Pepper wasn't sure if he'd know who they were, yet it seemed important to mention their contribution. "Four others too, but I don't know who they were. Everyone will be okay." Mostly thanks to the obsidian huntress and her healing abilities. Why couldn't she have a power like that? What was her power? Did she even have any?
These thoughts awoke Thalarctos' warning to them - gargled and spiteful. Pepper's upright posture fell into favoring frailty and submission whilst an unsure frown replaced her gentle smile. Many thoughts soaked in fear and self-doubt punctured the scrawny canine's mind in the next few seconds, yet only one question was prominent enough to quiver toward her tongue, "Morpheus, what will happen if I'm not worthy?" It only made sense that that was the case. She had mistaken herself as egotistical enough to assume she belonged here, yet she recognized no change from the time they first met to now. Unbeknownst to her, however, a great divinity was grappling its host. This increase of terror she felt were mere tentacles of what she was to become.
Her damnation was also her domain.

[googlefont=Roboto][googlefont=Montserrat][googlefont=Open+Sans] [attr="class","morpheus"] Something like joy threaded through him at the sight of her – and it seemed his feelings were reciprocated, as some of the stress that had drawn her body tight fell away. There was a familial bliss in their meeting, the quiet affection only seen when kin departed one another and returned again, hale and whole. He breathed out a quiet exhalation of relief as she assured her own pristine health. Morpheus listened patiently, as she gave some recount of her meeting with the bear. She spoke of two with a familiarity, and he wondered briefly if one was the black female he’d seen – not his own dark charge, but the Guide Oberon’s, who had possessed some sense of leadership amongst the gathered wolves when he’d joined the boar hunt. He did not interrupt her to ask, only marginally widening his eyes as she listed the number that had participated in the hunt. Any great beast was difficult to take down, but when faced against a horde of smaller warriors, it was only a matter of time before it fell. So had Thalarctos learned, faced against a half-dozen mortal dripping divinity, already wounded from a scrap with two full-blooded gods. He was dipping his head in a pleased bob, already beginning to think of how he might best praise her, encourage her – when the light she’d cultivated dimmed, shrinking away from with a suddenness that had his full attention quickly focused upon her. Pepper? When she spoke further, revealed the reason for this sudden diminishing, Morpheus’ ears reflexively swept back, not quite flattened to his skull, but showing his obvious displeasure at the query. Not that he was angry at her – no, it was that the words snagged in his mind, burrowed deep into his brain, scratching at some long-forgotten memory that refused to emerge, no matter how frantically he dug at it. Worthy – the word echoed in his ears, painting pictures of crystals in a never-ending cavern. It stretched backward, endlessly, endlessly – and beyond – darkness. His divinity instinctively recoiled from the shards of memory, something hard and heavy settling in the pit of his stomach. Faced with such overwhelming dissuasion, Morpheus was all too happy to turn away from the image, instead refocusing upon Pepper. His ears slowly crept forward again as he forced himself to relax. The tension that had begun to crawl up his back, making his guard hairs bristle, smoothed away with a small twitch of his shoulders. He took a deep, cleansing breath, scenting the faint sweetness of snowdrops, the comfort of Pepper’s unassuming musk. “You are worthy,” he said firmly. “In fact, I would show you, if you’d let me.”He’d meant to do it sooner – but the boar and the bear had derailed such plans. And he knew it would temporarily wipe her fears away, remind her of just how special she was. How long had it been since a mortal entered the realm of the gods? For him, it was commonplace, an everyday mysticism that was sometimes almost quaint in its perfection. But for her – surely it would be akin to a revelation. “We’d have to travel a bit,” he continued. “But I promise the destination is worth it.”[attr="class", "godling"] tags: Pepperwords: 536 notes: get in the god realm pepper!!! Pepper How did Morpheus always sound so sure? Perhaps it was a perk of being a god - to be certain in how things would unfurl after eons of observation. In any case, Pepper was eternally grateful. Those divine words wrapped around her quivering spirit like a warm blanket full of assurance. Tendrils dripping in trepidation withdrew from their host and hearth as confidence once more built its foundation within her. She was not a vain wolf. Not one to take this verbal confirmation lightly. To be a god was more than simply taking the title and powers that came with it; if she was to achieve this goal, one in which her Guide fully believed she could, then she would do so the right way. The female's skeletal features stood taller. Her expression shifted from an unsure frown to a surprisingly competent smile. Though hints of fear and anxiety still danced within the olive pools of the canine's gaze, casting a bigger shadow was determination.
After all, she wouldn't be taking this journey alone. Morpheus would be with her each shaky step she took to reach these ends - her antlered mentor that had quickly became kin. Pepper knew he would help her whenever he could, and, perhaps when she had the ability, she too could help the struggling god in return. Her keen observation hadn't missed the turmoil shivering across the ghostly male's features nor did her nose mistake the new yet weathered scent of fear for something else. It seemed that even divine beings had troubles, but that was for another time. The emaciated creature had no means to aid him currently so it was best to let the topic move on.
"Of course. Though... may I ask where is it we're going?"
When it came to the placid dreamer, there was no other that could compare to the trust she placed in him. Quartz may surpass the other mortals, but none yet equaled the pillar that Morpheus was placed upon. Thus when he beckoned her to follow elongated limbs made brisk work of the distance. She would stay by his flank if and when they departed to this unknown destination. Though many things still remained a mystery to Pepper, she couldn't help but feel a youthful excitement at the aspect of discovering a new part of herself.

[googlefont=Roboto][googlefont=Montserrat][googlefont=Open+Sans] [attr="class","morpheus"] Some of the tension bled from his stomach as she regained her earlier cheer – trusting in his words as simple facts. And he believed they were – was willing to stand against other gods who might feel differently. It was a new feeling to him, though in truth most feelings were new when bereft of memories. But this struck deeper, a chord that had never before been plucked, and he knew it instinctively. He did not pause to ponder, only offered a small smile as she responded so positively. He turned then, with a swish of his wavy tail, a gallant toss of the antlers that sat upon his brow. He led her due north, toward the Hidden Woods, the cavern that led into the passageway – that itself acted as a sort of entrance into the realm of gods. It would not be a long journey, for the Cradle touched all by its very nature, and Morpheus knew the most direct route that led them over the kindest ground. “To the Hidden Woods,” he told her as they moved along – occasionally he would glance back toward her, instinctively knowing when it was safest to do so, the path before him clear. Her spidery legs lent her something of a skittering appearance but with the fear washed away, she came across more doe-like, high-stepping and elegant. She would make a wonderful god, he thought. A tall, willowy creature, cloaked in the same mysticism that possessed him. With a further dash of confidence, she would almost appear otherworldly – and appearance was important when earning respect from mortals who could not look beyond their own nose. Not that he thought she’d need it – she’d harnessed her fear in a way he never quite expected. With time, he thought, she could very well become an incredibly powerful god, helpful or hurtful as was her will. For a time he was quiet, focused on the journey, but as they at last reached the woods, he led her deeper, saying, “And then to the cavern. It is of limestone, I think. You’ll know it always by the way it gapes open like some great dragon’s maw.”Briefly, one ear flicked back, uncertain. Did mortals know of dragons? “It is large,” he said at last, in case she needed further explanation, using his antlers to tug aside a branch, holding it as he nodded her through ahead of him. Then at last they were before the cave’s entrance, yawning open, threatening to reach up and swallow the sky. The air about them had begun to thrum with ripples of divinity as they first entered the Hidden Woods – now it positively buzzed, a steady hum that made his heart pound faster. But he had him stop at the entrance, one paw raised as if to enter. He turned to meet her gaze, his own blue eyes solemn, and said, “To my knowledge, you are the first of the mortals to enter. When we enter, you must concentrate of this place I will describe to you. You must picture it as clearly as you can, and do not waver in your focus on it. Not until I speak to you again. Do you understand?”And he paused here, awaiting an answer. [googlefont=Roboto][googlefont=Montserrat][googlefont=Open+Sans] [attr="class","pepper"] A cave in the Hidden Woods. Pepper had only been around the area once and that was a quick grab-and-go lunch. Yet, with a name like that, one shouldn't be very surprised that it held more than what is seen at first glance. Morpheus described it to be formed of the sierra mineral limestone. He also compared its opening to the gaping maw of a dragon, which at first was a lost analogy for the female. She came from a land where fanciful tales and legends were on the brink of extinction - but after some thought the stories of great beasts that spat fire from her puppy days came to mind. The thought of going into the belly of what she imagined one of those behemoths looked like was a bit unsettling, but she kept composure by sternly reminding herself that it was just a cave. Or was it?Her Guide had spoken of unveiling her divinity - showing her that there was no mistake in her appearance here. Surely a simple cavern couldn't do all that. No, it must be what was inside the large passageway that was important. Perhaps some mystical oasis harboring fruits of knowledge for only the lips of the divine. Or maybe the unspoken ruler of these lands that had sat within since the beginning of time. Really there were countless possibilities that Pepper could come up with and each grew more grand than the last. Anxiety and excitement clashed with one-another as the two neared what could only be their destination. Morpheus had described it well with the short outline he'd given; it stretched open in a never-ending howl. It was as if it was trying to slowly open its great jowls wide enough to swallow the island. But it wasn't just the size that turned the scrawny beings eyes a bit wider - no, something echoed through the air unseen. She felt it as if it bumped against her soul with every beat; a gentle yet firm strum on a harp it seemed like. Pepper felt ready. Like the beat of her heat synced with this new pulse of energy and it beckoned. Her stilt-like appendages would of kept moving, too, if not for the fact that her mentor stopped. The horned male spoke with a seriousness that she hadn't heard since their first meeting. It twisted her guts with a familiar fear, yet her thinly-sculpted cranium gave a confirming nod, "Yes. I understand."Whatever test or trail this was, Pepper didn't want to fail. She would move whenever the dreamer began to lead the way - almost a perfect picture of determination if not for the shiver that crept up her spine. tags: Lirrielwords: 447 notes: ready! and thank you so much for this table oml i love it <3 [newclass=.pepper]max-height:400px;color:#E1DFD8;text-align:justify;padding:10px;width:440px;font-family:Open Sans;font-size:10px;overflow:auto;background:#000;opacity:.5[/newclass] [newclass=.pepper b]color:#843a30;text-shadow: 0px 0px 2px;font-family:montserrat;letter-spacing:1px;[/newclass] [newclass=.pepper i]color:#dc2f18; font: 11px Roboto; font-style: italic;[/newclass] [newclass=.pepper::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background-color: #fff; width:1px; [/newclass] [newclass=.pepper::-webkit-scrollbar]width: 5px; height: 5px; background: #ccc; border: 3px solid #f0f0f0;[/newclass] [newclass=.pepper::-webkit-scrollbar-corner]background: #ccc; border: 2px solid #ccc;[/newclass]

[googlefont=Roboto][googlefont=Montserrat][googlefont=Open+Sans] [attr="class","morpheus"] In the face of her unwavering bravery – despite the flagging fear that clawed at her sides, tried to creep up her pelt, nestle deep in her fur, in her hide, in her heart – Morpheus could not help but smile. He knew, instinctively then, that she would be fine. Even if they were to be separated, she possessed the strength of will to handle whatever the god realm saw fit to throw at her, an interloper in its lands. With time, it would recognize her divinity, recognize her right – or perhaps it would know from the very beginning. Regardless, she would succeed. So, with renewed confidence in his voice, he said, “We shall travel to the Floating Isles. They are perhaps the kindest of the various lands that inhabit the realm of gods. Do not mistake their name for some clever moniker – they truly float. Entire chunks of land, so high up you cannot see the ground – if there is ground. Each teems with life, prey that have never learned to fear our kind, rivers that have never been touched by our tongues. It is eternal summer there, forever blooming. If you were to think of a paradisal land, any one of those isles could serve as its inspiration.”Morpheus strove to nestle the image inside her – though in truth it was less an image (because how could you possibly describe something that no mortal eyes had ever seen?) and more a desire, that he attempted to instill. If she wanted – properly, strongly – then she would receive. That was the way of the divine lands. At last, he said, “We shall go now. Keep what I have said in your mind. Think of nothing else. And I shall see you on the other side.”Again, he flashed her a smile, and then it disappeared as quickly as it had appeared, a look of concentration turning his face to cut marble, eyes facing forward as he stepped into the gloom. For a time, they walked in light cast by the entrance of the cave. But the deeper they pressed, the more the sounds from outside deadened, the more the light crept away. And when at last the entrance was entirely swallowed up by darkness, the cavern revealed its true character. A faint glow came from all around, cast by numerous crystals, submerged in the rock face. A soft drip of water echoed, out of sight. And as they went deeper, the pressure of divinity grew stronger, became almost tangible. The further they went into the god realm, away from the constraints of the mortal, the more Morpheus’ divinity was unveiled, his horns taking on a new shine, the white of his pelt practically glowing. And at last he passed from the mortal realm to the realm of the gods.
