ISMENE NIAMH “Give me a show, and we can count your debt settled.”So he - she - whatever, wanted a show. Isme thought of all the times that she'd been forced onto her (figurative) knees and made to beg. The memories infuriated her to no end. She thought of the cruel faces, the jabs thrown her way, and the false tears she had shed to trick them into assuming repentance. It had come at no additional price - after all, it had been little more than a means to an end. But this? Even though the smile had long since faded even before he - she - it had spoken yet again, her teeth gritted together; it was revealed in the slight tense of her jaws. Walk away, her heart urged. Walk away and find your own answers. It was common for the heart to do as it wished, and go where it would, for it was the way of a sapient creature to do so. And in moments of fury the heart was volatile; the heart was a beast of mindless desire, wont to wander far from reason. Her own heart vowed revenge, but the flesh remained still and unmoving, so there would be no physical indication of anger. No doubt one could assume, and the god could assume for herself whatever she wished. Was it worth it? Suddenly Ismene found herself quite calm. In the instant of the deciding thought the girl banished the cries of her heart and swept her mind into control of her body. She felt as if she were above it all, looking with a cold eye upon her body from somewhere out of it. As if she were a puppeteer pulling the strings, the girl flattened her ears. Within her was a world of cool, rational calm. Her head dipped slightly; the eyelids half-closed as if in remorse. The face slackened, a soft sigh escaping. Her consciousness observed it from what felt like somewhere far away, as if she were merely forcing her body to do her will. "Great Calliope," said the wolf. The wolf was a skin-sack of organs. The wolf crouched in a bow, nose touching the soil. "I have seen the error of my ways." It intoned in a voice that didn't quite seem to belong to it. It sounded hollow. "Indeed you are merciful for having taken such patience with this pup."Watching herself, Ismene realised that all the times she had grovelled, her mind had been somewhere further away, bending the physical form through the motions. And in that moment she realised she and the wolf were almost like two different entities in the same body. It was an interesting thing to note: that instinct did, after all, have its uses. [googlefont=Roboto][googlefont=Montserrat][googlefont=Open+Sans] [attr="class","icarus"] And so, the whelp relented, just as Calliope knew she would. Living creatures would go to great lengths to ensure their survival – Calliope had seen them freeze, starve, and bleed for days on end, only to fend off the reaper itself and cling doggedly to life – and swallowing their pride was hardly an impressive feat. It maybe have been more difficult for the whelp, as it was for most egotistic brats, but, in the end, they would all bow. The whelp, the other mortals, even the gods would grovel at her feet one day. Calliope would make sure of it. So, the lackluster performance was not a victory, but an expectation. And while the God had been the one to suggest it, she didn’t care enough to pay attention to the whelp’s monotonous drone. The moment the brat’s eyes glazed over, a distant look Calliope had seen many times before when confronting those beneath her, the God scoffed. She had been hoping for something a little more appetizing, a hint of fire to indicate that the whelp could still be beaten and bested, but the pathetic display curbed her hunger, turning her stomach like the smell of rancid meat. It was time to leave. There was nothing more for her here. With a dismissive grunt, the crocodile turned to slither back into the Lake, shattering the water’s calm surface upon its entry. “This is the mortal realm,” it paused in the shallows, allowing the water to carry some of its bulk. “You will be here for quite some time, so I suggest you make the most of it. Survive, try to force some knowledge into that pea-sized brain of yours, and learn some manners. The next time we meet, I expect you to know better than to waste my time. Your ignorance is not my problem. Oh, and one last thing.” Turning it fixed her with a blood-chilling glare, topaz irises having been replaced by a brilliant emerald color, one that was wholly unnatural against the crocodile’s visage. “Work on your groveling. Godlings like you look better in the dirt.”And with that, both crocodile and God were gone. The former sank beneath the waters and disappeared from sight, and no matter how one scanned the crystalline lake, there would be no sign of the giant reptile lurking within its depths. As for Calliope, well, could anyone confirm she was ever present in the first place? tags: Niamhwords: 406 notes: yuppp she's gone [newclass=.icarus]max-height:400px;color:#E1DFD8;text-align:justify;padding:10px;width:440px;font-family:Open Sans;font-size:10px;overflow:auto;background:#000;opacity:.5[/newclass] [newclass=.icarus b]color:#98b1b0;text-shadow:0px 0px 2px;font-family:montserrat;letter-spacing:1px;[/newclass] [newclass=.icarus i]color:#fff; font: 11px Roboto; font-style: italic;[/newclass] [newclass=.icarus::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background-color: #fff; width:1px; [/newclass] [newclass=.icarus::-webkit-scrollbar]width: 5px; height: 5px; background: #ccc; border: 3px solid #f0f0f0;[/newclass] [newclass=.icarus::-webkit-scrollbar-corner]background: #ccc; border: 2px solid #ccc;[/newclass]
