Note: Further info on this hunt can be found here. [attr="class","hunt5"] The great bear trudged slowly across the lake. Each breath he expelled was accompanied by a jet of icy air. The water beneath his paws had been instantly frozen just by his presence. Waves of cold rolled off his shaggy pelt, a noticeable limp accompanying each step he took.
Damnable Gods, he thought.
They’d torn the claws from his front left paw, mangled his back right one to where it now dragged more than stepped – and they’d taken his eye.
He could feel the gaping wound even now – it had long ago stopped bleeding and now frostbite licked around the edges of the empty socket, turning the skin blackened and dying.
But he would think of that later. For now, he had to leave the valley, return to the mortal world that so long ago had cast him away.
They had hidden him in the realm of gods, led him across ever-shifting lands until he could no longer remember what his original point of entrance had been.
But, finally, he’d escaped. Slipped out while they dealt with that she-beast of a boar. Not even savaging him had been enough to dissuade him from the freedom that beckoned.
But that didn’t matter anymore – thoughts of the gods, thoughts of his prison. What mattered now was further escape, out of this valley, away from this world. Until he could slip back amongst the flesh-and-blood, the truly living, who would remember why the jaws of winter had always been shaped like a bear’s.
For now, he crossed the Borealis Lake in the easiest way he knew, his cold divinity forming an icy land bridge. Far below the thickened ice, built to withstand his immense bulk, the crystals of the lake glittered and glowed, reacting to the disturbance caused by his powers.

Her travels today took her to what she was sure was a beautiful lake on a scenic plateau at any normal time. This was hardly a normal time, however. Waves of cold and divine hit her too strongly to be mistaken for anything else, and nearly all other signs of life were eerily absent. Something was going on here – something she felt responsible for. Why not? She’d taken part in putting that boar out of everyone’s misery, she’d snagged a couple rabbits that didn’t belong in the realm, and she’d taken part in a particularly flawless hunt involving an elk spirit. All of it had been leading up to this, somehow, and she’d been part of everything. Of course she’d also be drawn to this.
Though…there was something about this creature that set it apart from all the others. Something even beyond the obvious mastery of ice it possessed. Could this be an actual god? She may be more powerful than she had been to start, but she was no god. Not yet. She’d have to keep hidden for now and hope others were drawn to this beast just as she was. Then they could coordinate a plan of attack. Even a perfectly mortal bear was dangerous prey, and being wounded could make it fight that much harder.
She did her best to keep out of sight, using any tree or shrub in her path as cover while she focused on her power. She could sense life, so she would be able to sense when other wolves arrived and act accordingly. All she had to do was keep hidden and wait.

If anything, it was a favorite place of his to circle back to time and time again. Prey animals were plentiful in the area, drawn to the it because of its reliability as a water source, but the bountiful hunting was not the only reason Caspian constantly returned. The lake’s natural beauty called to him more than the amount of rabbits or deer ever could. On the nights he couldn’t sleep, he liked wading out into the shallows. There, in the still of the darkness, Caspian would look down at the water’s surface, decorated with reflections of the stars above, and would feel as if he had truly become one with the heavens. It was in those moments that he felt the distant echoes of freedom ringing in his ears, and he was distracted from the memories of his childhood and his mission at hand.
It was with that intent that he had come to the lake today, chasing after peace and quiet and calm. But, there was something off about the land, something strange and dangerous. Without his bidding, the fur along his spine slowly stood to attention, and he crept through the trees with caution, ears sweeping back and forth as he remained alert to his surroundings. But, no matter how hard he strained, he heard nothing. The forest was devoid of birdsong, the chatter of squirrels, of all the noises that were usually present, and Caspian had no idea why until the lake finally came into view.
There, in the center of the lake, was a large, lumbering bear. This, Caspian was sure of, having seen enough of them to recognize them at first glance. However, the bear on the lake was different, than any he had ever run into before. Frost slipped from its shaggy pelt in waves, crystalizing in the air and melting away into a trail of fog that was anything but normal. The great beast lumbered painstakingly across the surface, freezing it underfoot with every step, and Caspian knew the creature was not of the mortal world.
It has to be from the stories, Caspian reflected in silent awe, crouching behind a thicket of bushes to remain hidden. The tales Mother told me of the world beyond this one, of gods and monsters and creatures so divine we have no name for them. Though he yearned to draw closer and get a better view, his survival instincts kept him firmly rooted in place. Bears, even the regular kind, were vicious and could kill a wolf if not given a wide berth. Supernatural bears, he figured, could be even worse. Tamlin knew the presence of a god. That scent of other, a stillness in the air. Now though there seemed something dangerous, reeking of other and chilling the water he drank from. Slowly raising his head from the surface of the lake Tamlin set his eyes on the bear striding confidently across an ice bridge of his own making, and for the very first time, a taste of true fear turned the taste of water into pungent bitterness in his mouth as the fur along his spine spiked.
The only word he could align this beast within his mind was an old god, malevolent and unforgiving. Slowly, very slowly Tamlin began to back away, experience told him that lingering too long would draw it's attention and that was the last thing he wanted without backup.

Pepper Pepper wasn't fond of being away from the expanse of snowdrops she called home; the rest of this unknown realm only brought on a thick anxiety that begged each paw to turn around. Yes, she had wandered away a few times to chase after that irresistible taste of divinity. But today was different - deadly. An unnatural cold hung in the air; meanwhile the silence made each feathery step forward sound like a drum. This tantalizing musk, while undoubtedly alluring, held an undertone of icy danger. She wanted to turn around. Leave it alone. Yet that was impossible. Not because of her greed to have the sacred meat, but instead because she knew the others would be drawn to it as well. Quartz, Leyda, Zora, and the rest that she knew not the names of. She had seen and felt the damage a mere boar could do; there was no chance of leaving her comrades to face this great energy alone.
Stilt-like limbs crept forward with a stealth as if her life depended on it - which it might. Agile form weaved through what cover was kind enough to provide until a glistening lake rolled out before her. On its frozen surface lumbered the source of the godly aura. This being was unlike any other they had faced. It swayed the temperature with its whim, carving a path for itself like perhaps Morpheus might in his own world of dreams. This bear, if one could even call it that, reminded her a lot of a Guide. It was just as powerful and deserved every ounce of respect and weary Pepper granted it. A large berth was given to the unwavering behemoth as a better angle was sought.
Luck seemed to be momentarily on her side as chance put her on the path toward the familiar obsidian female. Quartz was both a delight and horror to see here. It was great to have the skilled huntress around as both support in and out of the fight, but Pepper also didn't want to see the wolf hurt. Still, upon approach, only the positive side was proffered in the form of a smile. The salt-pepper canine slipped up to flank the younger female, granting Quartz a few inches to lead the way when the time came. It would of been nice to talk, but there was no way she was going to risk the beast hearing them. Besides, even if they could, the panic that was already beginning to choke the frail wolf wouldn't of allowed it.

[googlefont=Roboto][googlefont=Montserrat][googlefont=Open+Sans] [attr="class","icarus"] Once upon a time, Rubedo had been a creature of terror and triumph. A god of war, his prisoners had whispered. A god of summer, his partner had murmured. A god of fire, all the followers of Flametongue chorused. But then he had chosen the continuation of his legacy over the chase of his fallen godhood. And he had produced Icarus and Cerberus by Dionysus, who was known as the strongest of their kind. And they had been heralded as royalty, as rulers, upon the island they had conquered. And they had reigned long. There was more to the story, of course. Of the destined lovers’ first meeting, of the great eagle they had torn from the sky. Of the way they had caught Winterfang, cruel traitorous god of winter, brother to Flametongue, and torn his soul from his mortal form. But if you asked Icarus, he didn’t believe in gods. Not in sky deities, at least. Not imagined watchers who perched upon stars and granted wishes with a lazy sweep of their tail. No, his gods had always been front and center before him – a pair of powerful creatures that ruled absolutely: His parents, though as he cast off the mantle of childhood, it became harder for him to think of them as Father and Dad. Rubedo had already shed the far more affectionate Papa two summers ago. He didn’t believe in gods – but he found himself hard-pressed to say what the creature that walked across the lake was, if not a god. Or where he was. Which was the more pressing question, really. Forget the glowing blue bear making literal ice appear beneath its paws, forget the cold wind that had chased it out onto the lake. Where the hell was he? Crouched beneath a bush, heart hammering at the back of his throat, Icarus gulped, trying to remember his parents and the teachings they had bequeathed to him. Don’t fear, Dad would say. Fear numbs the senses, makes you stupid. And Father: Wait for others. Strike after they do so. You are royalty; they are worms. Sacrifices.Which, you know, in any other situation, Icarus might have argued back that thinking of other wolves as totally separate beings was a really damaging thing to do and maybe that was why Rubedo was screwed up – and obviously he’d infected Dionysus with the same crazy a long time ago, sorry Dad – but now he clung tightly to their words, willing his breathing to calm, his pulse to slow. Because for all that every nerve ending screamed at him to run – there was also a gnawing desire in the pit of his stomach, something that felt like fire beginning to alight within his veins. And, yes, he still needed to figure out why he’d so suddenly found himself transported from a snowy forest to the foot of a crystal-clear lake. But the possible god bear was more of a concern right now. tags: Lirrielwords: 493 notes: huehuehue [newclass=.icarus]max-height:400px;color:#E1DFD8;text-align:justify;padding:10px;width:440px;font-family:Open Sans;font-size:10px;overflow:auto;background:#000;opacity:.5[/newclass] [newclass=.icarus b]color:#b84a00;text-shadow:0px 0px 2px;font-family:montserrat;letter-spacing:1px;[/newclass] [newclass=.icarus i]color:#e07934; font: 11px Roboto; font-style: italic;[/newclass] [newclass=.icarus::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background-color: #fff; width:1px; [/newclass] [newclass=.icarus::-webkit-scrollbar]width: 5px; height: 5px; background: #ccc; border: 3px solid #f0f0f0;[/newclass] [newclass=.icarus::-webkit-scrollbar-corner]background: #ccc; border: 2px solid #ccc;[/newclass]

Post by Zora Talus on Jun 26, 2018 16:17:48 GMT
[googlefont=Roboto][googlefont=Montserrat][googlefont=Open+Sans] [attr="class","socold"] Zora’s paw had ached during her return trip towards the lake. After the boar her cracked ribs had ached with pain as well. The water had calmed her inflamed joints as she lay submerged after a few moments like that she would rise and come to rest at the waters edge. A whisper passed her thoughts of the frost that she wasn’t sure was real upon her arrival her. The tug was almost immediate to the water as Borealis had come into view. Fervently the first few days she had hoped the water would not be in truth calling to her. The thoughts of her past that rattled her at times seemed almost distant lately. Still there, but the panic or momentary fear didn’t cloud them anymore. It was almost freeing, she would never forget the mistakes of then, but her future was bright.
After a few rounds of the cooling water she came to sit still dripping, weight centered off of her right front leg. Concentrating on the drips of water running down the likely fractured paws she began to want and feel for the change. The drips began to freeze and the cold provided relief to the swollen joint. The feeling of it was like a few pieces connecting in a puzzle, familiar feeling. It was a few minutes later as she attempted the same with her ribs when the air had changed. The temperature starting to drop had caused pause for Zora along with the silence that fell over the lake. Nothing in sight immediately but the knowledge of divine creatures had made the smart choice to get away from the open. As quick as she could she made for the tree line and protective underbrush. The bear’s approach had hard to miss, even the feel of it was pulling her senses toward it. Complete still she crouched though, eyes sighting a few unknown wolves as well as the familiar sight of Quartz and Pepper. A nod of her head just slight was given to them both, happy to see them was not a good enough description for the relief felt.
Another had appeared though that she had seemed to miss at first. “He needs to get out of there.” The thought came to mind silently as she finally saw the fiery colored newcomer in the path of danger. This was going to require a coordinated effort, Zora wished she had started to practice unfreezing, maybe that would have come in more handy. She turned her sights back on the large spirit, wishing against all odds that it would sink and tire. What lay ahead would be much harder she suspected.

[googlefont=Montserrat] [attr="class","hunt"] [attr="class", "godling"]Thalarctos Challenge Rating: Legendary HP: 75 / 150 Reward: 100 Evo Points + Ghostly Mutation [attr="class","hunt6"] Note: Blizzard currently in effect. All wolves will lose 2 HP per turn, excluding wolves with dominion over Water or Air. [attr="class","hunt5"] At first he gave no notice toward the wolves that had silently surrounded the lake, their many eyes focused on his lumbering form. But then there came the biting chill brought by a tugging wind – it rolled across each of them, flinging the scent from their fur, carrying it to the great bear upon the center of the lake.
He breathed deeply, stood there in the center, the ice beneath his paws rapidly expanding outward, downward – reinforcing the bridge he had made and preparing a stage for the battle that was to come.
Thalarctos counted the individual scents: one, two, three, four, five, six – something of life, the acrid tinge of fire, the soothing waves of water. Again he drew breath – there, the taste of fear, charcoal destruction – and the slightest hint of something begging him to heal, to mend.
Then he braced his injured leg and rose on his hind paws for a brief moment, rearing his head back to open his mouth in a chilling scream that began as a bear’s roar and rose high into a wind’s shriek.
He thudded back down heavily, as the powerful call reverberated out across the lake, frosting the top of the unfrozen water, bending back the trees that grew nearest, casting upon all the wolves his frostbourne fury.
“Wooolves,” he moaned. “Suuuuch – cowards!” He snarled, something undecipherable to the creatures who watched him, then spoke again, lips wrapping crudely around the words, “First them – now meeee?”
He screamed again, a fox’s yell that rose into a wolf’s death shriek before finishing as a series of clicks.
And he smiled, grimly, as the wind that had tugged at his fur and brandished his wrath began to gather about him, throwing out chilling whips of air that sliced through the lake’s surface, turning it choppy and harsh beyond the icy platform he stood upon.
OOC: no rolls this time. yes, you can understand his speech, he can speak many languages. :> (he'll occasionally speak in other species' languages, but those aren't translated)

One by one, she could sense the others nearby. Maybe she couldn’t see them all, but these days she didn’t need to see life to detect it. She knew they were nearby enough to hear a potential call, and she knew they were all mortal wolves like her. All drawn to the scents and sense of this godly bear, and each likely knowing the purpose of their presence here.
Among those nearby beacons of “life – wolf” that she sensed were two familiar faces. Pepper she recognized instantly, having met her a couple times by this point. The salt-and-pepper smiled at her, and she dripped her head in return, her tailtip swishing a couple times in friendly greeting. She was glad to know of at least one reliable presence among those assembled, though she would worry for the wolf she’d started to consider a friend. Then there was the sand-and-white from the boar hunt, and Quartz responded to her in the same way. Two reliable presences, then. Possibly. It was better than the complete unknown this situation would be without them.
Her gaze focused once more on the bear, who didn’t seem to have spotted them at first. Then the air changed and froze around them, and her fur fluffed out in response, hackles lifting. This chill was as unnatural as the beast walking on the lake. The water underneath their target continued to solidify around it, and she watched carefully. It knew – it had to have scented them by now.
The bear lifted onto its hind paws and screamed – a roaring sound that made every muscle tense and ache. That was all the warning before another blast of cold hit them, even affecting the trees around the lake. His voice came again, calling them cowards, and…well…she wasn’t sure what his second statement had been about, and everything else was purely incomprehensible and seemed meant to trap them in fear.
This battle was going to be different from all the others. She had figured as much, but it was becoming apparent just how different. This bear had more to him than the weapons and instincts common to all of his kind. He was dangerous, and would be leaving them no cover or safe purchase. She drew in a deep breath, then, and slunk away from the others, heading around the lakeshore as stealthily as she could manage and finally bursting out into the open a short distance away from the two wolves she knew, near a frozen path that would take her directly to the bear. Here she assumed her most aggressive stance – fur standing on end, tail and ears up, and jaws snapping. Let him see her – let him focus on her. Then, if the other wolves were smart enough, perhaps they’d be able to find another path to the bear and surround him…maybe even get in an attack or two while he tried to attack her.
She’d give everyone else a few moments, and then charge forward. Her intent was to rush ahead – as careful on her slippery path as she could manage, circle the bear, snap her jaws shut on that hind leg he seemed to be favoring, and then hurry out of reach as fast as she could. Perhaps she was being a bit reckless, but this wasn’t a battle where they could waste their time, and someone had to make the first move and try to keep their opponent’s attention to give everyone else a better chance. She’d rather that wolf be her than anyone she cared about.

Pepper Gods, the fear that flowed through Pepper right now seemed tangible with how thick it was. She could already sense that this great beast was different from the rest, but never would she of guessed HOW different. Its power rolled through the air in icy waves, kicking up loose dirt and spitting frozen crystals in every direction. The sudden blizzard stung the female's eyes and easily dug past her coat to nip skin. If she wasn't trembling before she certainly was now, and it only seemed to get worse. The specter gargled a voice, a wolf's tongue, that sent ice-cold blood through Pepper's veins. This was insane. Impossible. Hopeless. There was no way she could face this Winter-embodied creature. Already she could envision the bodies of her brethren strewn across the frozen lake. He would mutilate her scrawny body with a single swipe of those deadly claws; he would kill all of them. A pitiful whine escaped the salt-pepper hunter's pressed lips like a pup begging for their nightmare to go away.
Then, Quartz was gone. The pitch canine had slunk forward and was now shooting across the smooth surface straight for the demon. The skeleton female was in complete shocked stasis. All she wanted to do was run for the hills - take the easy way out. It would be simple enough in theory, but impossible in practice. Pepper was a coward. She knew that. Yet, no matter how her muscles ached with pain from overwhelming terror, she would never abandon those that needed her. Most may think her pathetic, including herself, but the frail being held much more behind that anxious exterior. She didn't look the part of a hero - body shaking, tail tucked, and every hair standing erect - but Pepper would certainly do her best.
It was painful to shove forward like she did, though that fact didn't stop her. A wince twisted hard lines into her snout and brows, but her steps remained as sturdy as her lightweight form could manage. Both pads and claws worked together upon reaching the ice to assure grip was sustained throughout. On the hard surface it sounded as if each quick thrust forward echoed into a crescendo of war drums to her ears. Was she scared? Terrified. Tears burned as they built upon olive pools, yet, despite a complete lack of confidence, everything was put into her final lunge. Morpheus had told her to face this fear. Was this what he meant? It was a question she would have to ponder another time if the chance was given. For now, ivory incisors aimed for a tricky hold on the monster's wrist. Pepper wanted to disable the mighty fore, but she would settle for simply keeping her grip to at least hinder it for now if successful. There was no time to call for her Guide, so instead a silent prayer was sent.
Hopefully Morpheus would hear her desperate plea for help once more.
