In this case, your character becomes temporarily responsible for a litter of lost pups. How do they respond to the sudden and unexpected burden of parenthood? Would this scenario unearth a deep-seated longing for familial intimacy? Or would it convince your character not to settle down?

Post by Hiraeth on Jul 25, 2018 13:14:57 GMT
Hiraeth had had many plans throughout his life. He had wanted to live free and wild, to love and learn everything he could. He’d wanted, once, to be a great warrior and protector, someone others might look up to for his strength and physical prowess. So many ideas for what a great life would entail had filled Hiraeth’s mind that they’d been difficult to contain.
Children hadn’t featured in a single one of those great ideas – at least, not children Hiraeth was to care for himself. He’d never accounted for the presence of squirming, crying little bodies. This world did like to throw the unexpected at him; it had already thrust the responsibility of becoming a god upon the copper coated male, but looking after a litter of whelps? That was a responsibility too great, too important.
Hiraeth knew he would screw it up.
Large eyes, still blue in infancy, stared up at him as if asking what on earth he was going to do with this new task. Keep them alive, he thought, for the sake of the gods, keep them alive. The rest can come later.
So Hiraeth used his body to shelter the weanlings, standing over them and grimacing when their sharp little muzzles searched for milk he couldn’t provide. His attempts to explain that fell on deaf ears, of course.
He thought ahead and the farther ahead he thought, the more panic he felt bubbling in his gut. He would need to hunt, eventually. He would need to find a way of feeding them. And eventually they would learn to speak, to ask questions, and Hiraeth knew he would not have the answers.
It didn’t seem to matter that he was getting far ahead of himself. When Hirae had found himself in the Black Forest he’d been curious, contemplative, dubious – but never this afraid. The more time wore on, punctuated by squeaks and yaps and cries, the tighter that fear’s grip on him became -
- until he had to move, to stretch his legs and to be able to think. He extricated himself carefully from his new wards and lumbered off into the trees.
A sharp yelp brought him running back, resigned to the fact that he was too dutiful a man to abandon youths who had already faced abandonment.

then came the night of the first falling star Pups were not in the itinerary - supposed godhood, yes, fledgling powers, yes - but children? They were young, small things, still squirming creatures that refused to settle down and be quiet. Ismene knew a great many things but taking care of children was not one of them. And they were past the stage of wordless cries; their mouths had learnt to babble words and tongues had found the formative shapes for lisped speech. Too small to be left alone, too old to simply leave to die - thusly the dilemma presented itself.
The girl shook. She was not yet old enough to even reproduce, let alone care for pups. And yet, here they were. Was that the beginning of maternal instinct? Surely it could not be, or - perhaps it was a glimpse of a future. She felt something akin to pity swell within her breast. She was a youth, yes, but so were these children... and younger still... Guilt would eat into her if she left them there to perish - but!
- how could she leave them to death?
They too must have stirrings of divinity, or they would not be here. Ismene found her body reacting as it wished to; she did not stop herself as she curled up around them. The children whined, prodded her belly for any semblance of milk, sustenance that she could not provide. Had their teeth formed? One of them yawned, revealing razor-sharp whites. Perhaps they could eat soft foods - but then she would need to seek it out. And what if she could not?
Could they even die? If this was a land of gods, then were they children of gods?
And the parents. Where were they?
The thoughts reeled in her mind but her head tilted down of its own accord, drawing the children closer to her small frame with her muzzle. Ismene placed her head over one that had nuzzled close to her neck. It was so small, even compared to her. If she waited - perhaps then, the mother would arrive. But for now?
There were children to take care of.

Post by Iiona Faure on Jul 26, 2018 6:56:51 GMT
[googlefont="'Playfair Display':400,400i,900;Open Sans:400;400i;900;"][nospaces] [attr="class","iionawords"] As the four young pups squirmed at her feet, Iiona was nearly overwhelmed with a sense of foggy nostalgia. [break][break] Pups are the future, her father had informed her once, many moons ago, as they watched a new mother lavish gentle care over her freshly born litter. None of us are immune to the passage of time. One day, everyone we know will have left this earth, but the pack will withstand these losses because the new generation will rise up to take their place. As an alpha, it is your job to lead, but one day you must also have children of your own to raise in your footsteps. Love them, guide them, and teach them the difference between right and wrong, for they will be your legacy. [break][break] She had eagerly absorbed his every word back then, drinking in his lecture like a thirsty boar at a fresh watering hole, but she had never even thought that it would become relevant so soon. One day had always seemed so far off for her, and compared to some of the other issues she had to face, starting a family was never in the forefront of her mind. There was simply too many other things to worry about: making sure the pack was fed, protecting their claim to the land, keeping their dens hidden and safe from the hungry crocodiles that roamed the island. Finding a mate and having children always appeared so juvenile, so insignificant in comparison, so she never bothered to give it much thought; she would address it when the time came. She just never thought it would happen now. [break][break] Iiona had stumbled upon the abandoned den purely by chance. She had been in the midst of hunting, searching for whatever prey she could find in this bizarre world she had been throw into headfirst, when a plaintive wail caught her attention. Following it, she found the pups in the hollowed out roots of a massive tree that stretched into the skies, not unlike the ones back home. They were hungry, squirming weakly over each other in blind search of their mother’s milk, but a quick inspection informed her that no adult wolves had been in the area recently. The pups had been abandoned, either deliberately or as victims of misfortune, and she hurt for them. Every one of their desperate squeaks tugged at her heartstrings. They were poor souls, helpless, without a single friend in this world, and Iiona could not – would not – leave them as their parents had. For she had been left behind once too, her mother succumbing to the effort of Iiona’s birth. But her father had been there to ease the ache, to fill the hole and pass onto her the warmth of her late mother’s love. If he hadn’t been there to do so… Iiona shuddered at the thought. [break][break] Solemnly, she squeezed into the makeshift den and curled up around the pups protectively. Seeking the protection and heat of her pelt, they crowded closer to her, growing silent as they found comfort in her presence. And, though the way they had already come to trust her so brought a faint smile to her lips, she forced herself to remain objective about the circumstances. The younglings would not survive without milk, something only a proper surrogate could provide, and time was quickly running out. The odds were very clearly stacked against them, but, no matter how slim their chance at success was, Iiona would stay with them until the end, no matter when or how it came. [break][break] She had never signed herself up for motherhood, but Iiona had never been one to shy away from her problems.

[googlefont=Roboto][googlefont=Montserrat][googlefont=Open+Sans] [attr="class","pepper"] Fear had been a near constant companion for Pepper ever since her arrival. She had come to understand it deeply with each day that waned by. In some ways it had dulled and bent to her commands, yet in others it lashed out with child-like rebellion. So how could such small things rival the Goddess in their expression of this inky emotion? Their tiny jowls laying agape in desperate wails whilst dirt-stained eyelids shut tight to the unfamiliar world. It was a situation that she could relate to. Not long ago the skeleton wolf had been thrust into this realm with nothing but her fear for comfort. But this wasn't about her.Three lives, new to their roles, were in danger of being extinguished long before their time. Pepper's elongated limbs teetered on the edge of the shadows. Did she want to help? Of course. Their pain and loneliness stung the female's frail heart - after all they couldn't survive here alone. But could she even care for them? She had never been responsible for anyone but herself, and she couldn't even do that right. Perhaps someone better suited would come? Yet that didn't seem likely. The scrawny canine had been standing there for a while already and no one else had showed up. Did they not care? Teeth clenched behind pursed lips toward that thought. No. Pepper wouldn't leave them to face the chaotic domain alone any longer. Tender steps announced her arrival along with a voice so gentle that one would never guess what horrible emotion she reigned over. tags: heikawords: 260 notes: --- [newclass=.pepper]max-height:400px;color:#E1DFD8;text-align:justify;padding:10px;width:440px;font-family:Open Sans;font-size:10px;overflow:auto;background:#000;opacity:.5[/newclass] [newclass=.pepper b]color:#843a30;text-shadow: 0px 0px 2px;font-family:montserrat;letter-spacing:1px;[/newclass] [newclass=.pepper i]color:#dc2f18; font: 11px Roboto; font-style: italic;[/newclass] [newclass=.pepper::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background-color: #fff; width:1px; [/newclass] [newclass=.pepper::-webkit-scrollbar]width: 5px; height: 5px; background: #ccc; border: 3px solid #f0f0f0;[/newclass] [newclass=.pepper::-webkit-scrollbar-corner]background: #ccc; border: 2px solid #ccc;[/newclass]

She’d known of several wolves to end up here, all destined for godhood if her guide was to be believed. She’d even seen a pup or two wandering around the lands. That didn’t make her happy – it was hard enough for an adult wolf on their own to find their place in a land like this. A pup should never be forced to wander unprotected.
That was how she felt, but not how the land felt. Pups – in the plural – wandered the land a short distance away, not yet noticing her presence. Same size, similar appearance…likely similar smell. She was sure this was a litter, either abducted or abandoned. At least, no other adults seemed to be in sight.
Well, it fell to her then, didn’t it? She couldn’t live with herself if she just left them on her own. She padded toward the pups, mentally preparing herself for her new mission of the next few seasons. They weren’t hers, but it was the duty of every decent wolf out there to protect those who couldn’t protect themselves. And who knew, maybe she’d even get along with them. Her pack-to-be could always use more members. This meant she’d have to put any other plans on hold, but she’d attained godhood – what did a year or two matter in the face of immortality?

[googlefont=Roboto][googlefont=Montserrat][googlefont=Open+Sans] [attr="class","vidar"] "By all the gods!"Vidar stared down into the shallow den in the creek bank, aghast. He hadn't thought it was empty. He had known there was something inside. A fool could have deciphered those scratches and squeaks. So what did that make him? A fool of a fool of a fool. The biggest fool that ever fooled. And now he was here, on the edges of a nightmare, fighting to remain in the present. It was the now, it was the here. Berry was dead. These were not his pups, would never be his pups. His children were dead. These mewling pups were something else, someone else's. Were they even mortal? Could they grow and learn, or were they stuck in this form for all eternity? What poor bitch would suckle these creatures until the end of time? No. They were real. They could grow. How did he know? Well, he was a potential god after all. So. Here he was. And there they were. For an instant, he was seized with the impulse to flee. To turn his pack on the tiny, innocent creatures within and leave them to die. Would anyone be surprised? Hadn't he wandered off too far once before? They would not be the first pups that had died on his watch. Gods, would he ever escape the memory of returning home to scraps of fur and drops of blood? The bear had not even left their bodies to be buried next to Berry. He could not do it again. Could not bear another stain on his soul. With a sigh, Vidar took the last few steps into the den. He lowered his blocky head and gently licked the head of the first pup. tags: heikawords: 286 notes: such a boi [newclass=.vidar]max-height:400px;color:#E1DFD8;text-align:justify;padding:10px;width:440px;font-family:Open Sans;font-size:10px;overflow:auto;background:#000;opacity:.5[/newclass] [newclass=.vidar b]color:#e8b58f;text-shadow: 0px 0px 2px;font-family:montserrat;letter-spacing:1px;[/newclass] [newclass=.vidar i]color:#e8b58f; font: 11px Roboto; font-style: italic;[/newclass] [newclass=.vidar::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background-color: #fff; width:1px; [/newclass] [newclass=.vidar::-webkit-scrollbar]width: 5px; height: 5px; background: #ccc; border: 3px solid #f0f0f0;[/newclass] [newclass=.vidar::-webkit-scrollbar-corner]background: #ccc; border: 2px solid #ccc;[/newclass]

Post by Sundew on Aug 2, 2018 20:34:06 GMT
[googlefont=Roboto][googlefont=Montserrat][googlefont=Open+Sans] [attr="class","sunny"] Sundew raced in a circle around the clearing, sending spouts of decaying leaves and soil high into the air with every foot fall. Exuberance filled every line of her body from white snout to the end of her fluffy white tail. Playmates! All hers, to do with as she pleased! She gloried in it, feeling her joy pulse out of her body in invisible waves that nevertheless seemed to shimmer with pure happiness. It was not enough, apparently, to override the terror of the two creatures in the middle of her circle felt. Their pitiful whimpers drew her attention instantly, causing her to sid to a halt. More dirt flew into the air. Sundew turned toward the little blind lumps and cocked her head. Now that she had stopped to think, she didn't blame them for their fear. How could she? Here she was, a big rangy stranger, acting like she didn't have a thought in her head. With a quiet chuckle, Sundew admitted to herself that she quite honestly hadn't. She took a slow, hesitant step toward the two grey bundles. Sunny reached out with the sense that was still so new. It had awakened only recently, and yet she felt as if it had been inside of her even in the mortal realms. There. She grasped onto what joy her echo had brought to the pups and amplified it. It was difficult to explain exactly what she was doing. It wasn't quite conscious. She knew these creatures could be happy, and so she made them happy. She wouldn't be able to explain more without a degree in magic, and those were hard to come by. The pup's wriggling changed. Became less frenzied. She took the final steps to them, lowered herself, gathered them to her. For a moment she was still, only breathing, only feeling two heartbeats alongside hers. For the first time, she felt an entirely new kind of joy. One that left her breathless, one that robbed her of her words more surely than any injury. This was what it was all for, the goal of life. To feel this. tags: heika words: 354 notes: notes go here [newclass=.sunny]max-height:400px;color:#000;text-align:justify;padding:10px;width:440px;font-family:Open Sans;font-size:10px;overflow:auto;background:#ededed;opacity:.7[/newclass] [newclass=.sunny b]color: #d03d72;text-shadow: 0px 0px 2px;font-family:montserrat;letter-spacing:1px;font-size:11px;[/newclass] [newclass=.sunny i]color:#d03d72; font: 11px Roboto; font-style: italic;[/newclass] [newclass=.sunny::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background-color: #fff; width:1px; [/newclass] [newclass=.sunny::-webkit-scrollbar]width: 5px; height: 5px; background: #ccc; border: 3px solid #f0f0f0;[/newclass] [newclass=.sunny::-webkit-scrollbar-corner]background: #ccc; border: 2px solid #ccc;[/newclass]
